Preserving Italian Language and Heritage in Australia: The Power of Family Connection

We’re so grateful to have our “Assaggio Amica” contribute this lovely blog post about the importance of the Italian language and the role it plays in keeping Italian traditions and forming strong family bonds.

Monica comes from Piemonte in northern Italy and shares her story below about how her experience arriving in Australia led her to setting-up her own language school!

Arriving in Australia on a sunny January day in 2013, I was warmly welcomed at the airport by Cosimo, my Italian-Australian friend whom I had met while working at a restaurant in Alba, Piemonte. Little did I know that this encounter would mark the beginning of a beautiful journey into the vibrant world of the Italian language and culture in Australia.

Cosimo’s Italian was already impressive, but what struck me was his unique blend of Calabrese words and a charming dialect accent. It was like experiencing the best of both worlds—an Australian who spoke Italian with a delightful twist.

Soon enough, I discovered that this delightful twist was not uncommon among Italian-Australians. Many embraced their regional dialects, creating a rich tapestry of linguistic diversity. I found it fascinating how their Italian seamlessly blended with Australian culture, forming a harmonious connection.

As I settled into my new life, I quickly realised the significance of preserving the Italian language within the Italian-Australian community. It became evident that by nurturing our language, we could keep our heritage alive, bridge generational gaps, and safeguard the beauty of Italian for generations to come.

Immersed in a vibrant community, conversations effortlessly flowed between English and Italian, sprinkled with the delightful dialects from various regions of Italy. Each accent carried its own charm, taking us on a linguistic journey through Italy. From the melodic Neapolitan dialect to the rolling R’s of the Venetian dialect, every variation added to the cultural richness of our conversations.

But the true magic was not just in the words we spoke; it was in the stories we shared. Over plates of homemade pasta and cups of rich espresso, I listened to tales of migration, family traditions, and cherished memories from the old country. The Italian language acted as the thread weaving these stories together, creating a tapestry of shared experiences and a profound sense of belonging.

Preserving our Italian language is not only about cultural identity; it also strengthens family bonds. Speaking Italian at home creates a unique connection that allows grandparents, parents, and children to communicate, share stories, and maintain a strong sense of familial ties. It becomes a space where traditions, values, and memories are passed down, nurturing a deeper
understanding of our heritage.

Allow me to share a personal example. As a new mother, I am fully committed to embracing the Italian language and its benefits for my “second-generation Italian boy.” We read Italian children’s books, sing Italian nursery rhymes, and engage in playful conversations that spark his curiosity and love for the language. It’s a joyous journey we embark on together, building a strong bond and creating lasting memories.

Research has shown that bilingualism offers numerous cognitive benefits, including improved memory, enhanced problem-solving skills, and increased creativity. By investing in our family language and encouraging our children to learn and practice Italian from an early age, we provide them with invaluable tools for personal growth and a broader worldview.

At Su Misura Italy, (my online Italian language school) we understand the importance of preserving Italian language and culture within families. Our team of experienced teachers is dedicated to providing personalized Italian language lessons tailored to your needs and proficiency level. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking to refine your skills, our courses and workshops cater to all levels of proficiency.

You’re welcome to join this incredible journey of language and culture as we celebrate the magic of Italian and the connection it brings to our lives. Let’s make the most of our family language, investing in the rich tapestry of our Italian heritage. Together, we can ensure that future generations
continue to embrace their Italian roots with pride, joy, and a sense of belonging.
