The Assaggio Story
Nonni (Italian grandparents) are the people who do things ‘come una volta’ (like in the good old days), the people who maintain traditions, and the people who in small but impactful ways create our culture.
It is so important to document the traditions of this generation of Nonni so that the traditional practices and beautiful stories, full of history, love and passion, are never forgotten.
Assaggio means taste and in preserving Italian traditions, we hope to share a taste of the love and humble works of these beautiful people through unique and meaningful online experiences for you to enjoy.
From secret family recipes to being in the garden with Nonno or trying your hand at a traditional card game, immerse yourself in the traditional Italian culture and learn from our precious Nonni.
Whether you go it alone for some “me time” or gather your friends and bring you loved ones together, it’s an awesome way to connect to age-old practices ‘da una vita’ (from a lifetime) and have a bit of fun.

Assaggio Founder and Director Chiara Barbera is the granddaughter of four Italian immigrants. Born in Brisbane, Australia, the Italian culture, tradition and Nonni enthusiast, grew up alongside her Nonni. Within her strong Italian community and from her time spent living in Italy, Chiara has always loved connecting with Nonni and the beautiful stories that they have to share.
Assaggio was born from her dream to preserve Italian traditions, celebrate Nonni and share their amazing culture and knowledge with you.
